Lakota Studies 400/600:  Special Topics:  Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Science

Unit 2 Assignment

This week, the assignment is to do the following 2 things:

1)  Lab Exercise 2  - visit the link for Lab 2.  The lab includes a review of some of the functions in ArcView GIS that you explored last week, with new functions added that are designed to keep you moving forward.  The lab involves analyzing a world earthquake data set, downloading current data from the Internet, formatting that data for use in your GIS, analyzing and querying earthquake data in maps and tables, and changing a map projection.

To complete the lab, highlight the whole web page with your cursor, and copy it to WordPad or your favorite word processor.  Paste the text there.  Fill in your answers, and email me the whole document when complete.  Follow this procedure with each lab.

2)  Go to any of the following web sites that describes an application of GIS to an issue on tribal lands.  Alternatively, feel free to use a different site that you find useful.   In your own words, write a 1-page paper that summarizes what a tribal organization is doing with GIS, why they are doing it, and what benefits GIS brings to the issue over paper-based mapping and analysis.  Email your document to me.
