USGS - science for a changing world

USGS Education

Project Objectives
USGS Education Home / California Education Standards / California Resources

The Committee to Advance USGS Science Education (CAUSE) began as a volunteer committee of scientists and information specialists representing all USGS science disciplines located on the research campus at Menlo Park, CA. Our primary objective is to help teachers gain access to relevant USGS resources suitable for classroom and outdoor instruction, and to provide resources to help new teachers tasked with teaching Earth Science and other natural science-related topics. Our second objective is to advance "educational resource" concepts to USGS research and operational scientists to help them develop materials that are suitable for K-12 education. The California Standards for Science Education were selected as a guideline for resource development for several reasons. This project was initiated partly in behalf of a California pilot science teaching resource/training program associated with NSF's DLESE (Digital Library for Earth Science Education; http://www.dlese.org) in cooperation with CSTA (the California Science Teachers Association; http://www.cascience.org). We also live within California, the most populous state with a lion's share of both natural resource and natural hazards. Our hope is that in the future, other groups and organization, both internal and external to the USGS can help advance this effort in other regions. This site will be maintained and updated, as time and resources allow.
